I've Been Hit...
I've gone GORT.My Income Tax refund came in, and I handed it over to Edna for production of the armour, and the Gun-melting Laserbeam for an eyeball! I could only afford the early GORT model, and not the upscale 2008 nanotech model. Edna was such a bitch, but times are hard, so she took me on as a "charity write-off." Whatever that means.
Mwahaha! The Banksters will bow to me!

The Galt Virus...
OK. It looks like we've got an outbreak in the Blogoshpere. This spreading virus is called PNAC F2 or proGalt. "Galtism" is sweeping the World Wide Web, and taking bloggers, apparently unawares, and turning them instantly into Randian Zombies.
The outbreak has spread to even hard-core Progressive Bloggers: D. Aristophanes at Sadly No! has Gone Galt.
But, that is not the worst of this breaking news... Reports are coming out that the virus is mutating:
skippy the bush kangaroo has gone Glatt. You read it here, well, later, probably.
Stay tuned for more.

Creep Out...
So, I was out picking Strawberries just now, and as I reached into to grab a nice, ripe berry, my hand brushed something that felt a bit odd. I cleared the leaves away, to find a two-foot long snake skin. The patterning was too faint and faded to make out, but it didn't have stripes like a Garter or Blue Racer. The mottling could have been from a King, Milk or, I fear, a Cottonmouth or Copperhead. Not enough of the head skin left to check for "pits," or even shape of eyes or head. I don't like that sort of uncertainty.
Needless to say, until I see the snake, I don't think I'll be sticking my bare hands into the berry patch for a while. Time to garden with the 9mm loaded with rat-shot.
Gah!

Bank of America Needs $33.9 Billion...
Want to buy a bridge?
via NYT
The government has told Bank of America it will need to raise $33.9 billion in capital to withstand any worsening of the economic downturn, according to an executive at the bank.
Executives sparred with the government over the amount, which is higher than executives believed the bank needed. But J. Steele Alphin, the bank’s chief administrative officer, said Bank of America would have plenty of options to raise the capital on its own before it would have to convert any of taxpayer money into common stock, a move that would effectively increase the government’s holdings in the troubled bank.
“We’re not happy about it because it’s still a big number,” Mr. Alphin said. “We think it should be a bit less at the end of the day.”
Financial markets in Asia dropped initially on the news as investors questioned whether the results of the government’s stress tests of the nation’s 19 largest banks, whose assets represent about two-thirds of the nation’s financial system, would show more weakness in the financial system than hoped.
The Treasury Department declined to comment on Tuesday evening.
More at the link.
Ummm. if the news was really as simple as $34Billion, Timmeh Geithner would be crowing about it, not keeping mum. This won't end well with Geithner, Summers and Bernanke at the helm. Where are the Inspectors General? Flag down on the play.
If you're of the betting sort, I'd go short of Bank Of America. That second, bigger wave of foreclosures is coming, and it is just beginning right about now. Those are the Prime Option ARMs, and the Commercial Real Estate Markets. Subprime was broad, but peanuts in comparative values.
A bigger number, in this case, would have actually given a whiff of credibility.
The "Stress Tests" are a debacle before they even finish. **heavy fucking sigh**
"FDIC" their asses, or let them fail on their own, already.
Feeding the Black Hole simply will not work any longer.

Today, I Gave My Garden A HUG...
Hypsizygus Ulmarius Garden patch, that is.
A great ally for most garden vegetables, this aggressive Garden Oyster mushroom unlocks nutrients from straw, sawdust, and organic debris, feeding the roots of underlying plants. Ideal for over-wintering and mulching, or early Spring planting where straw is overlaid, the HUG kit is a natural way to recycle nutrients and grow gourmet mushrooms at the same time.
It is the Elm Oyster, and just as tasty as the Golden Oysters that I am growing indoors. I dug up 3- inches of dirt between the rows of peppers and cabbages that are in last year's bean bed. I laid in an inch or so of hardwood mulch, and then the inoculated sawdust, and then mulched over the entire bed with another 4-inches of hardwood mulch. It is going to rain, again, tonight, so, the fungus should get set in just right over the next few days.
Before the Europeans brought them, North America didn't have Earth Worms. Fungi and insects built the topsoil we have. I am beginning to fully accept that if you are doing Raised Bed Gardening, you should also be doing Mycorrhizal Fungus production, as well. Put a patch in the compost pile, too! It's great for your plants, you get crops of readily identifiable mushrooms, and it keeps on giving.
Here, it is very well-explained in the Wiki:
In a mycorrhizal association, the fungus may colonize the roots of a host plant, either intracellularly or extracellularly. It is an important part of soil life.
This mutualistic association provides the fungus with relatively constant and direct access to mono- or dimeric carbohydrates, such as glucose and sucrose produced by the plant in photosynthesis.[3] The carbohydrates are translocated from their source location (usually leaves) to the root tissues and then to the fungal partners. In return, the plant gains the use of the mycelium's very large surface area to absorb water and mineral nutrients from the soil, thus improving the mineral absorption capabilities of the plant roots.[4] Plant roots alone may be incapable of taking up phosphate ions that are immobilized, for example, in soils with a basic pH. The mycelium of the mycorrhizal fungus can however access these phosphorus sources, and make them available to the plants they colonize.[5] The mechanisms of increased absorption are both physical and chemical. Mycorrhizal mycelia are much smaller in diameter than the smallest root, and can explore a greater volume of soil, providing a larger surface area for absorption. Also, the cell membrane chemistry of fungi is different from that of plants. Mycorrhizae are especially beneficial for the plant partner in nutrient-poor soils.
Mycorrhizal plants are often more resistant to diseases, such as those caused by microbial soil-borne pathogens, and are also more resistant to the effects of drought. These effects are perhaps due to the improved water and mineral uptake in mycorrhizal plants.
Mycorrhizae form a mutualistic relationship with the roots of most plant species (and while only a small proportion of all species has been examined, 95% of these plant families are predominantly mycorrhizal).[6]
Plants grown in sterile soils and growth media often perform poorly without the addition of spores or hyphae of mycorrhizal fungi to colonise the plant roots and aid in the uptake of soil mineral nutrients. The absence of mycorrhizal fungi can also slow plant growth in early succession or on degraded landscapes.[7]

Michele Bachmann-- In Her Own Words...
You go girl!
Let that Freak Flag Fly!
Ummm. That's $3.39 and not $3390, Michele. The scientist who did the study has repeatedly corrected that meme from the Republicans. But, then again, you didn't think that anyone watched "Hardball," or CSPAN, either. We'll let others get into the rest.

NPR's "On Point with Tom Ashbrook"-- "Republicans Debate Their Future"...
This is one hour of some of the bestest Radio you'll ever hear. Pop some popcorn and have a listen. Christine Todd Whitman, as the "moderate" Republican voice, versus David Keating, executive director of the Club for Growth, for the 21%-ers.
via NPR.org
The Republican Party lost Arlen Specter to the Democrats last week. Over the weekend, they lost Jack Kemp, a vocal proponent of a “big tent” GOP, to cancer.
It’s been a “bad to worse” patch for the Republican Party. First they face a Democratic president who 81 percent of Americans say they like. Then they face an America where only 21 percent say they’re Republicans.
The permanent GOP majority envisioned by Karl Rove has given way, in crisis, to a Washington wholly dominated by Democrats, and critics calling the GOP “The Party of No” (somewhere between “a doomsday cult and Scientology,” writes New York Times columnist Frank Rich).
This hour, On Point: we’ll ask where is the big tent for the GOP now, and does the Republican base want to raise it again?
Republicans, what do you think? Even if you’re no fan of Specter, are you worried about the GOP’s dwindling ranks? Do you want a broader party or a purer one? What happened to the “permanent majority?” Tell us what you think — here on this page, on Twitter, and on Facebook.
More, and the Facebook and Twitter links, above.
The comments, alone, are well worth the click. Wonderfully quotable.
Arlen Specter saying, "You have to have Reagan's big tent," sends a shiver up my leg. [/Tweety].
You guys, this here is some fantastically wonky, GOP cat-fight shit.
It's the center-right versus the Movement Conservatives and Religious Right versus the real Corporate/Financial Fascists for control of the Republican Party.

Hey, One Fly... What About Corn Ear Worm?
What do I need to know about ear worm protection for this corn patch? Any organic or health-friendly things that I can do to keep the worms away? I know that I need to get on-point when the ears start producing silk, after that, I just want to protect the corn in the least toxic means possible.
Stuff I am reading from AgExtensions, seems to lead me to believe that if I keep up the soil quality, mulch, and provide good nutrients, the moths will go to less-healthy corn fields. I don't exactly trust that assumption, as pests are aplenty in my area.
When and what should I do to protect this corn from worms?
I'm on-track for a harvest in time for the 4th of July. Is there a schedule of things to do for corn farmers?
Any readers?

Independence Days Are Here, Again!
Last year, Sharon Astyk proposed a nice motivator for gardeners and homesteaders, she called it Independence Days.
These are the general daily/weekly guidelines:
1. Plant Something.Recapping my week:
2. Harvest Something.
3. Preserve something.
4. Reduce Waste.
5. Preparation and Storage.
6. Build Community Food Systems.
7. Eat The Food!
1. Planted Peppers, Onions, Dill, Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Leeks, Sunflowers, Swiss Chard, Cilantro, Parsley, and three big containers of Kennebunk Potatoes (six plants per container-- same as last year). The Blueberries are doing fine, and seemingly happy in their place by the corn. It'll be time to hoe and mulch the corn as soon as the rain stops, as some sort of grass has sprouted up with all this rain.
2. I'm winding-down the last of the Asparagus harvesting, and getting into the Strawberry, Radish, Spinach, Lettuce, Broccoli, Swiss Chard (last year's survivors), and Green Onion harvests.
3. I've been drying Shiitake and Oyster Mushrooms nearly every day. Dried a lot of Rosemary and Mint over this weekend... and some catnip. Watching my cats cuddle up to the dehydrator, which I put on the living room floor, was WAY worth the effort. They went NUTS!
4. I broke out my trusty, ol' copy of, Extending The Table, and prepared a series of meals based on my harvests, and which built on leftovers from the previous day. GREAT Cookbook, BTW.
5. I scored up 220 2"x12"x12" patio blocks on Craig's List for a dollar a piece (they were 75-cents each, but, I asked him to make it a dollar each and deliver them. The cheapest I could get them at Home Depot or Lowe's was $1.50 each, plus tax.). I resorted to Chemical Warfare against the Bermuda Grass that has constantly invaded my raised beds (a VERY selective product from Hi-Yield, recco'd by the TNAgExtension). The grass died, and I reseeded with White Dutch Clover, today, while we're getting all this rain. The blocks arrive on Friday, and I'll lay down some weed-block, and put down the blocks around all the main beds. Die Bermuda Grass-- DIE!!!
6. Last week I helped two neighbors put in their gardens. This year, four of us neighbors have planned to trade, sell and barter our surpluses between each other, let the neighbor Kid, Andy, and out-of-work neighbor, Tommy, sell some surplus, and we each have planted extra of a staple specifically to give to the local Food Bank around the corner.
7. This morning, I invited Tommy and his wife to come and pick some extra strawberries from by front yard bed. As I was typing this, they brought over a GIANT slice of homemade strawberry shortcake. NOMNOMNOM... I've been eating a lot of salads, steamed Asparagus, and Swiss Chard cooked Southern Style. Strawberries for breakfast. Mint Tea-- LOTS of mint tea. Stockpiling those mushrooms, eating some with recipes.
Man, I've got a LOT to do this coming week, as, because I had to deal once and for all with the damned Bermuda Grass, and the heavy rains all this week, I am about two weeks behind where I really would have liked to have been for this planting season. I'm in the process of building new frames to double the depth of the Workhorse (4'x16') Beds from 6" to 12", and this weekend, I made a dozen trips to the local nursery to procure the soil, vermiculite, peat moss, and other organic goodies I put in my beds. I have a pile of composted cow manure scheduled to arrive on Saturday. I've got four different sets of mushroom spore with which, I am going to inoculate the fresh garden beds as I improve them. Knowing that the mushrooms that are sprouting are good and edible will be a treat, and that mycelium are busy keeping my soil good an added bonus. Come next Saturday/Sunday, I KNOW that I am going to be hurting from throwing 220 Patio Blocks, 50 bags of soil ingredients and wheelbarrows full of cow poop. Thank the gods for Jacuzzi Tubs and Epsom Salts!
So, let's all keep track of our "Independence Days" activities, eh? What are YOU doing in your gardens? What are you doing for food production?

RIP-- Jack Kemp, Age 73...
Cancer.
via HuffPo.
WASHINGTON — Jack Kemp, the ex-quarterback, congressman, one-time vice-presidential nominee and self-described "bleeding-heart conservative" died Saturday.
His spokeswoman Bona Park and longtime friend and former campaign adviser Edwin J. Feulner confirmed that Kemp died after a lengthy illness.
Kemp had announced in January 2009 that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He said he was undergoing tests but gave no other detail.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called Kemp "one of the nation's most distinguished public servants, Jack was a powerful voice in American politics for more than four decades."
Kemp, a former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, represented western New York for nine terms in Congress, leaving the House for an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988.
Eight years later, after serving a term as President George H.W. Bush's housing secretary, he made it onto the national ticket as Bob Dole's running-mate.

Jack Kemp's Wiki.
Other's will eulogize him better than I ever could. I never liked his shoe-horning of Supply-Side Reaganomics, which, looking back, will forever be viewed as the American Standard for long-term economic fail.
But, we still have Henry Kissinger to kick around. For good or ill.

"HOLA POPS" Recalled For Lead...
"A high level of lead" contamination. In a lollipop.
via MSNBC
CALEXICO, California - A California-based food distribution company is recalling candy imported from Mexico because it contains high levels of lead.
King Midas Inc. said Friday it is warning stores to stop selling Hola Pop, a caramel lollipop with a salted apricot in the center. The candy also comes in other fruit flavors.
The company says recent analysis of Hola Pop by the California Department of Public Health found that the candy contained a high level of lead.

You Read It Here, First-- Iron Man 2 Is In Production...
Got an interesting call this morning. The caller had dialed the wrong number, and got me. I let her talk, as she was on a roll. It turns out that Iron Man 2 is in production, and the Production Company is seeking some DoD support for some scenes involving ships and fighter jets.
I put her in touch with the proper person, and bid her the very best for the show.
Woot woo! I loves me some Iron Man.
